Welcome! Following is some information about current happenings within the philosophy department, particularly about enrollment, advising, and courses.

Spring 2007 enrollment, advising, and courses:

CLAS Student Academic Services has announced the following tentative beginning dates for enrollment:
    • seniors: October 24
    • juniors: October 27
    • sophomores: November 1
    • freshmen: November 7
    • non-degree: November 13

Main advising is scheduled for October 16 through November 7. If you’re a philosophy major, this is a good time to see me so that we can discuss your academic plans and make sure you’re on track. Appointments should be made using the sign-up sheet outside my office. Please make appointments at least 48 hours in advance, and please bring your ARTS form to your appointment with me.

As you know, advising holds are placed on individual accounts in Enroll & Pay under certain circumstances. CLAS Student Academic Services has sent undergraduate coordinators the following information about these holds and related advising:

• “Freshmen and Sophomores will have an advising hold placed on their enrollment. A majority of freshmen students will be advised in FSAC, as well as all undecided sophomores. Sophomores who have decided on a major will be advised by their major department.”
• “Students who will have 90 or more hours at the end of this semester and who have not declared a major...will have an enrollment hold placed on their enrollment as well.” Having declared a major is different from simply having declared an interest, so be sure you have actually declared a major if you will have at least 90 hours at the end of this semester.

You can see whether you have any holds by logging in to Enroll and Pay at https://sa.ku.edu.

For information about our spring courses, check out the "Course Offerings" part of our departmental web site at http://www.philosophy.ku.edu/Undergraduate/courses.shtml. (Note: Some of the following links may not be available until we get closer to the enrollment period.) Clicking on "Philosophy Course Information" will take you to a list of semesters; clicking on "Spring 2007 Courses" will take you to our current schedule of spring courses. Back on the "Course Offerings" page, clicking on "Spring 2007 Course Descriptions" will take you to some course descriptions.

Summary of major requirements:

The distribution requirements for the philosophy major cover five areas. (Asterisks mark those courses scheduled to be offered in spring 2007.)

Once you satisfy these distribution requirements, you may need another course numbered 500 or above, because you have to have at least 12 hours in courses numbered 500 or above. You have to have 27 hours of course work in philosophy, total. (Also, the minimum GPA for junior/senior hours in the major taken in residence is 2.0, and the minimum number of such hours is 9.)

Summary of minor requirements:

To minor in philosophy, you have to take at least 18 hours of course work in philosophy, and at least 12 of these must be in courses numbered 300 or above.
